Boss Vasseur Out To 'Write New History'

New Everton Women manager Jean-Luc Vasseur has declared his ambition to “write new history” at the Club, as he revealed his immediate priorities when he starts working with the Blues’ talented squad.

Vasseur has been appointed Everton’s new boss on a two-and-a-half year contract until June 2024.

The Frenchman’s previous managerial position was at Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, where he won the Champions League in 2019/20.

That season saw Lyon collect four further trophies – the French domestic title, Coupe de France, Trophée des Championnes and Women’s International Champions Cup – with Vasseur’s achievements recognised with the World Women’s Coach of the Year award.

Vasseur – who has also enjoyed success in men’s football during spells as boss at Creteil, Reims, Paris FC and Châteauroux – left Lyon in April this year, with the club having won 16 of their 17 league matches in 2020/21.

The new Everton manager outlined how he aims to instil a winning mentality in the Blues squad.

“I have experience in men’s and women’s football and had two outstanding seasons with Lyon,” Vasseur told evertontv.

“I’ve learned about winning everywhere and I come with the ambition at Everton to build a team that can achieve Champions League qualification.

“Everton is a club with big history. I have come here to write new history with my team.

“I have to learn and understand the players and the staff.

“I know the players, from watching [games] on video, so I am now going to discover the personality and the profile of them. It is very important, this human relationship with the players.

“We need all of them to build a team and to fight every week to win.

“When we play, we have to believe in ourselves.”

Many of Everton’s players are currently on international duty and Vasseur’s first game in charge will be on Wednesday 3 November, when the Blues travel to Leicester City to contest a Continental Cup clash.

Vasseur says the depth of quality within the Toffees squad gives him confidence the Club has a platform for success.

“We have a lot of talent and some resources, so I think there is good capacity to improve,” he said.

“I am very excited.

“First, we want first to qualify for European competition and after to win some titles – the cups or the championship.

“We have to be patient and fight to win.”

Vasseur’s first Women’s Super League game as manager will be on Saturday 6 November, when Everton host Brighton & Hove Albion at Walton Hall Park.

Vasseur described the WSL as “the place to be” and says he is savouring the opportunity to compete in such a fiercely-competitive, high-calibre division.

He also explained the instrumental role Evertonians have as the Club aims to establish itself as a domestic and European force.

“I count on the fans because they are very important,” he added.

“I see them as the 12th player in the team. It’s important the fans believe in this team, our players and the Club.”
