What The Papers Say - 19 October

Former Everton defender Michael Ball has written his column for the Liverpool Echo in reaction to Sunday's defeat to West Ham United.

The 42-year-old discusses certain aspects of the match and individual performances. In particular, he analyses Salomón Rondón's contribution across the 90 minutes.

"Rondón showed glimpses - the diving header, he didn’t get enough on - but he is playing catch up," writes Ball.

"It’s a difficult one. You’re hoping to see some more sharpness after more training time at Finch Farm during the international break and Benitez said he’s looking sharper. He looks a little bit fitter, slightly.

"He is our main guy at this moment in time and we’ve got to hope he can get fit.

"It takes time. It’s not just about playing - he also needs time to rest and recover to be ready to be our main guy up front.

"Get in the box - you can see he’s trying to score. He just seems off the pace which is understandable."

On to transfer speculation and French outlet Jeaunes Footeux have tipped Everton for a move for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The 30-year-old was on target during last night's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace but began the match on the bench.

Lacazette has struggled to break into the starting team under Mikel Arteta and with his contract expiring next year, a move in January for a reduced fee or a free transfer in the summer could be on the cards.

The French media organisation claims Everton are 'closely following' the situation with the Arsenal striker, but West Ham are also said to be interested.

One striker who has been linked with a move away from Everton is striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calciomercato reports that Real Madrid are considering a move for the England international next summer.

The move in question would see a reunion for the 24-year-old with Carlo Ancelotti, who worked with Calvert-Lewin for a year-and-a-half at the Club.

The Everton striker is under contract until 2025, agreeing to an extension last year.
