What The Papers Say - 11 October

The views on this page are taken from the local and national media and do not necessarily reflect the views of Everton.

We begin with a series of transfer reports starting with Juventus' Aaron Ramsey.

Italian outlet Calciomercato claims Newcastle United have joined the race to sign the Wales midfielder.

Everton have been linked with the 30-year-old for some time, with previous reports claiming he could return to the Premier League next summer.

However, it now seems the Blues will face competition with the north east side - who are under new ownership - alongside Crystal Palace who are also believed to have enquired on the midfielder's availability.

Another player Everton may face competition for is Real Betis' Rodri Sanchez.

Spanish media outlet Fichajes reports that the Blues, Brighton and Southampton are all keen on the attacking midfielder with a move possible next summer.

Their report adds the 21-year-old's asking price is "very low" so it could be down to a matter of personal preference the Spaniard wishes to play next season.

And finally, the Liverpool Echo provides reaction to the news over the weekend that Leighton Baines has joined Paul Tait's Under-18s set-up on a short-term basis.

The legendary Blues defender will work under Tait as his assistant manager and Elliott Bretland from the Merseyside paper believes the players have a great role model to look up to.

"He always did get it right," the Echo reporter writes. "Whether it was consistently putting in top performances on the pitch or his ability to find an attacking team-mate with ease, Baines made the correct call.

"A consummate professional, the decisions he made throughout his career meant he was able to enjoy a storied 13-season spell at Goodison Park before hanging up his boots in the summer of 2020.

"Baines has huge wisdom to pass on to the young men hoping to make the grade as a professional but, in terms of their long-term development, it could be said his passions away from the pitch will be just as key.

"He’s been there and done it the correct way it seems, for the club and for himself.

"Leighton Baines the player is a brilliant role model but perhaps Leighton Baines the man is the perfect mentor for Everton’s youngsters.

"If they can get it right like the former Blues defender did, they won’t go wrong in their football careers."
