Everton Defeated By Unbeaten Arsenal In London

Everton were unable to make it a third win in as many games as they lost 3-0 to an to hosts Arsenal in Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Meadow Park.

Katie McCabe, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Frida Maanum were all on-target for the Gunners who maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Willie Kirk’s side commanded the match early on with a high press to combat Arsenal’s persistent play out from the back but the home side struck first just after the half hour mark.

Republic of Ireland's McCabe had the ball straight at her feet just outside of the box and rifled home a curling shot which MacIver couldn’t get in the way of.

Arsenal seemed to shake off their humbling 4-1 loss away to Barcelona and grew in confidence as chances came at a premium for the Toffees and less than ten minutes later the lead was doubled.

This time, a high, curling corner found the head of centre back Wubben-Moy for her first goal of the season.

The biggest chance for the visitors came in stoppage time of the first half.

Toni Duggan couldn’t get herself on the end of a teasing ball from Izzy Christiansen and somehow it went just past the post. Any sort of contact and the deficit would’ve been halved.

The Blues were unable to get themselves back into the contest despite experienced England international Christiansen trying to unlock the sturdy Arsenal back line.

But the busiest player was Sandy MacIver. She made a number of strong saves to keep Kirk’s players a lifeline to try and get back into the game, but they ultimately couldn’t capitalise.

Frida Maanum made it a third in the 85th minute after she fired a lethal shot into the top corner to finalise all three points.

Everton will be looking to get back to winning ways with another away trip to Manchester City this Wednesday in the Continental League Cup.
