Townsend Wins PL Goal Of The Month Prize

Andros Townsend’s blockbuster strike in Everton’s 3-1 victory over Burnley has been voted as September's Budweiser Premier League Goal of the Month.

The award success sees Toffees summer signing Townsend make history as the first player to win the accolade on three occasions.

He collected the prize twice at previous club Crystal Palace – first in March 2017 for his incredible solo goal against West Bromwich Albion, while the winger’s breathtaking long-range volley at Manchester City saw him take the honour in December 2018.

Townsend’s fabulous effort against Burnley came out on top from an eight-goal shortlist, with the winner chosen by a supporters' vote combined with the choices from a panel of experts.

The 30-year-old’s award-winning strike came in the midst of an exhilarating six-minute spell which saw Everton score three times to come from behind to beat the Clarets – and Townsend says the atmosphere at Goodison Park “was one of the best I’ve ever witnessed”.

“It was incredible,” he said. “Honestly, it was absolutely electric.

“The position I picked up for the goal is where the manager wants his wingers to play – in the pockets between the line of midfield and the opposition’s defence.

“Doucs [Abdoulaye Doucoure] found me, I took a bad touch, but I was able to recover it and I thought, ‘Why not have a go?’. Thankfully, on this occasion it went in the top corner and helped us get an amazing victory.”

Following his 25-yard stunner, Townsend revealed his mum had provided some pre-match inspiration by sending him a video package of his best career goals.

“I hadn’t scored from outside the box in a long time,” he explains. “Then, all of sudden I get a compilation of my goals – a lot of them from outside the box – and within a few days I score a cracker.

“That confidence, belief, visualisation… It must play a part in what happened against Burnley.”

On becoming the first three-time winner of the Premier League Goal of the Month prize, Townsend said: “I didn’t know that! That’s amazing.

“With the technique I have off both feet, I’m able to shoot comfortably with my left and right. I’m not afraid to take on a shot and I’m not afraid to miss.

“It’s great to be scoring goals again and long may it continue.”

Townsend has enjoyed an exceptional start to his Everton career, with his first eight starts for the Club yielding five goals and three assists.

And the attacker set out his hunger to sustain his impressive form and play an integral role in a successful Blues campaign.

“That goal against Burnley gave me the belief I can score goals,” he said.

“And I think you’ve seen after that – my confidence – especially with the Manchester United goal [in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford].

“Maybe last season I’d have slashed at that chance, whereas I took my time, took a touch and slotted it into the corner. The more you score, the more confident you get and you relax in front of goal when the opportunity arrives."

He added: “To score five at the beginning of the season… If I was dreaming about the start to the season I'd have, it would be that.

“Thankfully, I’ve brought that to life, and I want to keep playing and scoring.”
