What The Papers Say - 30 September

The Athletic reports that the Club are optimistic on renewing the deal with young Blues forward Ellis Simms after positive talks.

The 20-year-old suffered an injury early into this season after a positive loan spell with Blackpool last season where he scored 18 goals in 36 appearances.

The Englishman's current contract is set to expire next summer.

In the same article, the outlet reports that Everton are seeking a new finishing coach after the departure of Francis Jeffers in May.

The coach held one-to-one sessions with the likes of Lewis Dobbin - who made his Premier League debut against Norwich City - and those close to the Club are reported to believe that there is a void in that specific area of the coaching department.

Onto the Liverpool Echo as the paper discusses how long it will be until Demarai Gray gets the nod from Gareth Southgate and returns to the England squad.

The new Blues signing has hit the ground running since returning to England and already as three goals and an assist to his name this season.

While Gray has been called up to the England squad back in 2018 for a friendly against Switzerland, the winger didn't earn a cap.

However, reporter Elliott Bretland writes that his impressive form could see him return to the international setup once more.

"This was a player who shined for the Under-21s, scoring eight goals in 26 matches for the Young Lions," the journalist writes. "After bursting onto the scene with boyhood club Birmingham City, he was a Premier League title winner with Leicester in 2016 and tipped for a bright future.

"Since signing for Everton this summer, he is back shining on the biggest stage and fulfilling the undoubted potential he showed as a teenager.

"If the Three Lions boss is picking on form, then Gray should be in with a good shout indeed."

Finally, on transfer speculation and Fichajes.net are led to believe that the Blues could make a move for AS Roma midfielder Gonzalo Villar.

The Spaniard was a regular last season, featuring for the Italian side on 47 occasions.

However, since the arrival of new boss Jose Mourinho, the 23-year-old has been limited to two appearances, neither of which have been in the league.

The Spanish outlet speculates that the midfielder could be made available in January for a fee around €5million with the Blues reportedly interested.
