LISTEN: Gary Stevens - 'Your Stem Cell Donation Could Save A Life'

Everton legend Gary Stevens has recently received the shattering news that his four-year-old son, Jack, desperately needs a stem cell donor after suffering a cancer relapse.

Speaking to evertonfc.com, Stevens discussed Jack's condition and the lifesaving potential of becoming a stem cell donor. Listen to our chat with Gary in the player at the bottom of this article or here.

Jack had been responding well to treatment for juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia, a rare blood cancer that affects young children, but it is no longer working and he has had to restart chemotherapy.

Jack's older brother, Oliver, provided the stem cell donation for his first treatment but the family has been told he cannot be used again.

"Jack will be set up for a second transplant," Gary explained. "Whether that’s sooner or later, it’s up to genetics and how well he is. We can't use Oliver for again, as his graph failed.

"It’s a process of finding as near a match as possible.

"That’s why we want to push the registry. It might come too late for us, but you never know... If they can extend Jack's process with chemotherapy and treatment, it might be three or four months before we get to a point where he’s ready for a transplant. In that time, a lot of potential donors can come to the fore."

Gary also explained the ease of becoming a stem cell donor.

"It’s a very simple test, it’s a swab in the mouth. It’s not like you have to get an injection or anything like that.

"There’s the potential for you to get a call or an email sometime in the future to say there’s a kid in Australia who is a match, here’s a picture of them... And if you’re prepared to give, then that could be lifesaving. That’s a pretty powerful thing."
