Cannon: Under-23s Hungry To Build On Back-To-Back Wins

Striker Tom Cannon has outlined Everton Under-23s’ hunger to sustain their momentum with victory in Friday’s Premier League Cup opener against Sheffield United (7pm BST).

The Blues head into the match at Southport FC on the back of an excellent 1-0 Papa John’s Trophy success at League One Morecambe on Tuesday night.

David Unsworth’s team are now targeting a third straight win, having also beat Derby County 1-0 in a Premier League 2 clash last Friday.

Everton Under-23s are in thick of a demanding fixture schedule and Friday’s match will be their first of six in 17 days – but Cannon insists the squad are ready for the challenge of maintaining their performance levels across such a hectic period.

“Coming off back-to-back wins and consecutive clean sheets, we’ll go into Friday’s game with confidence,” the 18-year-old told evertonfc.com

“All eyes are on that now.

“There are games every three or four days and it’s tough, but the lads are digging deep and I’m sure we’ll all be ready for Sheffield United.

“You can’t dwell on wins and you have to quickly focus on the next game. That’s what we’re doing and we want to perform well in every competition we play in.”

HIGHLIGHTS: MORECAMBE 0-1 EVERTON

McAllister hits superb winner in young Blues Papa John's Trophy victory.

Republic of Ireland youth international Cannon was an important part of a determined, resolute Everton performance at Morecambe on Tuesday, with manager Unsworth declaring his young players “came of age” in the game at Mazuma Stadium.

The teenage striker outlined the key factor in achieving a positive result against more experienced opposition.

Cannon added: “In games like that, it’s about winning your battles and helping the team.

“It was a tough match and it’s always a challenge against a League One side. The boys dug in very well, and we got a really good win in the end.

“Before the game Unsy said, ‘These are the games where you need to show what you’re about’. I think the lads did that.”
