Pickford Impresses But England Held By Poland

Jordan Pickford produced a faultless performance in England's World Cup qualifier in Poland on Wednesday night but the Three Lions were left frustrated as the home side struck a stoppage-time leveller.

Harry Kane’s swerving 25-yard strike gave England a 70th-minute lead but Damian Szymanski’s header salvaged a point for Poland in the Group I encounter.

Pickford, who was making his 40th senior England appearance, had previously made fine saves to keep out Jakub Moder and Robert Lewandowski but could do nothing about Szymanski’s last-gasp effort.

The game was played at a high tempo from the outset but clear-cut chances were hard to come by for either team.

While England enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, it was the home side who were responsible for the only two shots on target of the first half.

First, Pickford safely collected a low drive from Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Jakub Moder before the Everton stopper made a smart stop from a Lewandowski shot on the half-hour mark.

England upped the ante in the second half and came within fractions of opening the scoring when Harry Maguire headed Luke Shaw’s cross onto the post.

Pickford was then equal to Lewandowski’s speculative long-range strike moments before Kane’s superb opener.

Lewandowski was influential in Poland’s equaliser, though, digging out a cross for Szymanski to head home and ensure the points were shared.

England remain in a commanding position at the top of Group I, with Gareth Southgate’s team four points ahead of second-placed Albania with four qualifying matches left to play.
