Frustration For Coleman And Digne On International Duty

It was a frustrating evening for Everton's internationals as Republic of Ireland suffered a last-gasp defeat and France were held to a draw on Wednesday evening.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman was named skipper for the Irish as the Boys in Green travelled to the Estádio Algarve to take on Portugal in a FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier.

After Cristiano Ronaldo saw his 15th-minute penalty saved, John Egan opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a well-placed header.

The Irish led up until the 89th minute, when Ronaldo made amends for his miss from the spot by pulling the hosts level and breaking Ali Daei's long-standing record of 109 international goals in the process.

And Ronaldo wasn't finished there, as he headed home a winner with the last action of the game to consign Coleman's Ireland to a defeat that leaves them with no points after three games in Group A.

Elsewhere, in another World Cup qualifier, Lucas Digne played the full 90 minutes as 10-man France were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina in Strasbourg.

Edin Dzeko's gave Bosnia a first-half lead with an excellent 20-yard strike but it would last less than four minutes as Antoine Griezmann provided an almost-instant response.

Jules Kounde was shown a red card for France six minutes into the second period, but Didier Deschamps' men saw out the game to earn a point and retain their top spot in Group D.
