Townsend: It's Amazing To Play For Massive Everton

I’ve loved my time so far at Everton. It’s amazing how big this club is.

I’ve always known this is a massive club. Everton are ambitious with a great fanbase and I’m very fortunate to be here. I know the manager. He trusts me and so far I feel I’ve repaid his faith along with those who also brought me to the Club. I’ll continue working hard to keep doing that and get chances to be on the pitch for Everton.

Our win at Brighton on Saturday was a very professional performance and we’re all delighted. To a man we worked our socks off.

We knew it was going to be tough. I played two difficult games against Brighton last season, they are a very good side and one of the best teams I faced, but we countered well on Saturday, were clinical at times and deserved the victory.

They like to have the ball and if you sit back and let them have it they are going to be dangerous but we pressed well, starting with Richarlison and Dom, and then myself and Dimi [Gray] on the other wing had to be resolute.

Then there were the two boys in midfield, the defenders and the goalkeeper and the subs who came on. We all did the ugly side well. We didn’t let them dictate the play like we know they can and I think we deserved this victory because of what we did when they had the ball.

Allan’s a different class along with Doucs in midfield. They are both players who do the hard work but when you give them the ball, they’ve got the quality.

You saw that with the goals. Allan’s Brazilian – so he’s obviously silky! – and he had that ability to pick key passes at Brighton. We’re very fortunate to have him in the team and long may it continue.

I already know how much Evertonians appreciate hard work and I’ve got that side to my game. The manager also wants me in the final third to be getting in crosses and shots.

Now I’m really excited to get on the training pitch, work to improve my numbers of goals and assists. That’s what I’m going to continue to do in the international break and get ready for Burnley.

As for my fellow summer signing Dimi, it’s crazy when you look at the fee we paid for him in today’s market.

He was electric when he played for Leicester and we’ve seen it here from day one of his first training session the ability that he has.

The manager we have won’t let him rest of his laurels, though. Yes, he had a great game at Brighton and has made a great start to the season but I know come Monday morning the manager will be telling him what he didn’t do well to try to get the best out of him.

As forward players we need this type of manager and, fortunately, we have that in Rafa Benitez.
