Everton Beat Accrington In Practice Game

Everton completed their first week of pre-season preparations under Rafael Benitez by defeating Accrington Stanley 3-0 in a training game at USM Finch Farm on Saturday.

Spaniard Benitez oversaw his first training session since being appointed manager on Tuesday and will take charge of his first official friendly when Everton tackle Colombians Millonarios in this month's Florida Cup.

The manager used the practice match against the League One team to give game time to every available squad member, with a number of players still away due to international commitments.

Tom Cannon, the Under-23s striker, opened the scoring when he prodded home towards the end of the first half against a side who began pre-season training a fortnight ago.

And following wholesale half-time changes – in a game contested over two 40-minute periods – centre-half Lewis Gibson stole in to convert a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick at the back post.

Anthony Gordon, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Preston North End, ran clear for a clinical finish to complete the scoring.
