Everton At The Euros In Numbers

Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are bidding to become the first Everton players to win a European Championship semi-final tonight.

Pickford will start against Denmark, with Calvert-Lewin set to start on the bench, as Gareth Southgate’s team look to create history at Wembley.

Here are some stats on Everton and the Euros...

- Only four previous Blues have ever reached the last four of the continent’s premier international competition.

The last one to progress this far was the flamboyant Abel Xavier in 2000, but it ended sourly for the Portuguese defender.

Portugal and France were deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time ensued which would be settled by the ‘golden goal’ rule.

At the start of the second-half of the extra period, Xavier, who had forced French keeper Fabian Barthez into a superb save late in normal time, was adjudged to have handled a goalbound effort from Sylvain Wiltord and although the referee didn’t spot it, his assistant flagged and a penalty was duly awarded.

Zinedine Zidane successfully converted it and Xavier was so incensed that his subsequent protestations, pictured below, earned him a lengthy ban from international football.

- Alan Ball, Brian Labone and Ray Wilson were all in the England side that lost in the semi-final of the European Championship against Yugoslavia in 1968…and that ended in controversy, too.

This was the first tournament under the new guise after changing from the European Nations Cup and the format was very different in those days. The Home International Championship results of 1967 and 1968 were combined to provide a ‘group’ stage, which England won ahead of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Sir Alf Ramsey’s team then eliminated Spain over two legs in the quarter-final to qualify for the four-team knockout phase in Italy.

England were the reigning world champions. of course. but they lost 1-0 against Yugoslavia in the semi-final in Florence.  It was a bruising contest and the Yugoslavs earned criticism for their cynical play – indeed, the match is memorable for Alan Mullery becoming the first England player to ever be sent off when he reacted to another dreadful challenge before the end of the game.

- Pickford will win his 37th England cap (all with Everton) tonight and that will move him to within four of being the Club’s all-time record Three Lions international.

Phil Jagielka currently leads the way with 40, followed by the legendary Alan Ball on 39.

- Pickford in the ninth most-capped England goalkeeper of all-time with Paul Robinson (41) and former Everton coach Chris Woods (43) in his sights.

- If DCL gets some game time against the Danes tonight and manages to score he will become the fourth Everton player to find the net in the final stages of a European Championship, following Romelu Lukaku, Nikica Jelavic and Wayne Rooney.
