Pickford Shines As England Knock Out Germany At Euros

Jordan Pickford produced another outstanding display as England beat Germany 2-0 at a joyous Wembley Stadium on Tuesday to book a spot in the European Championship quarter-finals.

Second-half strikes from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane proved decisive – but the Three Lions had previously been indebted to a pair of superb saves from Pickford to keep Germany at bay.

Pickford’s first significant action came just after the half-hour mark when Timo Werner was slipped through on goal by Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz’s slide-rule pass. The Everton keeper was sharp off his line to narrow the angle and make a fine diving save.

Pickford made another vital intervention just after half-time, athletically tipping a blockbuster effort from Havertz over the bar.

Sterling sent England’s supporters into raptures with his 75th-minute strike, the Manchester City man firing in from close range.

And captain Kane ensured England’s place in the last eight four minutes from time when he headed home from Jack Grealish’s cross.

Pickford sustained his record of having not conceded a goal during the tournament with a faultless performance.

As well as making those terrific saves when called upon, his distribution was on point throughout, with one glorious crossfield ball to Bukayo Saka on 40 minutes strikingly illustrating his passing range.

He was decisive when dealing with German centres into the penalty area, too, confidently collecting crosses or punching clear to ease the pressure on his defenders.

Next up for Pickford and England will be a quarter-final clash with Ukraine in Rome on Saturday.
