Osman: Why Unsworth Was Ideal Candidate For Key Academy Role

Leon Osman believes David Unsworth’s experience, leadership qualities and “Everton DNA” made him the perfect candidate for the Club’s Director of Academy role.

Unsworth took up the position in September 2020, which allows the Everton Under-23s boss to bring all of the teams below the senior men’s squad into one management structure, providing a smoother pathway through the Academy and into the First Team.

Everton Under-23s are in pre-season friendly action at National League North side Guiseley on Saturday 17 July (3pm BST). Limited tickets remain available, click here to purchase.

Osman is one of Everton’s most successful youth products, having come through the Club’s ranks and established himself as an important player for the Blues for more than a decade.

When asked what qualities Unsworth brings to the Director of Academy position, Osman highlighted the fact his former teammate is well-versed in the “unique” blend of qualities required of an Everton player.

“It’s huge to have that Everton DNA,” Osman told evertonfc.com.

“I think it’s one of the most important things to have at a club.

“To have someone who has that knowledge of what makes an Everton player successful, of what Everton fans want to see out there on the field…that is key.

“I don’t think it is the same type of player and character for every single club.

“Everton is unique in my eyes and you need to have the right character to represent our club.

“David Unsworth knows exactly what the Club is about. He is very experienced throughout football, both as a player and a manager of the Everton Under-23s. He’s also managed the First Team on an interim basis.

“He knows the quality of players needed. He knows what it takes to represent Everton Football Club.”

Osman played a total of 433 senior matches for Everton, placing him joint-10th on the Club’s all-time appearances chart, level with the Blues’ greatest-ever player, Dixie Dean.

Only goalkeeper Tim Howard, meanwhile, has played more Premier League matches for the Toffees than Osman’s 352.

Osman says his time in the Academy provided a perfect grounding for his professional career – while explaining how a burning desire to succeed and improve is a key requirement for any emerging talent.

“Everton has everything in place to help you be a quality player, to make you the best you can be,” he said.

“What they can’t do is give you the hunger to go out and do it yourself.

“There will be ups, there will be downs. The test is how you can handle them.

“Do you sulk or do you roll up your sleeves? Do you want to be there after training sessions and continue working hard and trying to be the best you can be?

“Everton can help you, whether that be an Under-10s coach, all the way up to David Unsworth.

“But having that desire has to come from within.

“That’s what I’d tell every young player.”
