Everton Pair Start As England Win Final Euros Warm-Up Clash

Everton duo Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey started as England beat Romania 1-0 in their final European Championship warm-up match on Sunday.

Striker Calvert-Lewin was unfortunate not to add to his four senior international goals during a lively and industrious centre-forward display at Riverside Stadium.

He was withdrawn eight minutes from time, while Godfrey – making his maiden England start – delivered an accomplished performance in completing the full game at right-back.

The match was settled by Marcus Rashford’s 68th-minute penalty, with England’s attention now turning to next Sunday’s Euro 2020 opener against Croatia at Wembley.

Calvert-Lewin – Everton’s Player and Players’ Player of the Season – came close to getting on the scoresheet on three occasions against Romania.

He was fractions away from breaking the deadlock on 32 minutes after rising majestically to powerfully head James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick delivery at goal – his effort looked to be looping in but cannoned off the crossbar.

The 24-year-old threatened again just after half-time when he attacked another Ward-Prowse cross, only for Romania goalkeeper Florin Nita to make a fine point-blank stop.

Nita denied Calvert-Lewin again shortly before the forward was substituted, saving the Everton man’s well-hit strike from inside the box.

Calvert-Lewin was also fouled for a second England penalty – Vlad Chiriches penalised for a high challenge on the Yorkshireman – but Jordan Henderson saw his 78th-minute spot-kick saved.

Everton Young Player of the Season Godfrey, meanwhile, mixed alert and confident defending with penetrative forays forward, regularly progressing into advanced positions in the final third.

The match represented Godfrey's second England appearance, with the Everton defender having made his Three Lions debut as a substitute in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Austria.
