Everton has revealed a striking new away kit for the 2021/22 season that pays homage to one of the Club’s earliest strips.
The retro hummel offering is inspired by the kit worn by the Everton team of 1881/82 – a side that came to be nicknamed ‘The Black Watch’ – and is available to pre-order online or in store from today.
The black shirt with statement burnt orange sash and accompanying black shorts and black socks will be on sale in store, as well as online at evertondirect.com, from Friday 4 June, and will be worn by the First Team for Sunday’s final Premier League fixture of the season away at Manchester City.
The first wave of the 2021/22 training range is also available to pre-order now, ahead of release online and in-store on Friday 4 June.
A successful first year of Everton’s technical partnership with iconic Danish sportswear brand hummel saw the Club and its retail partner Fanatics, a global leader in licensed sports merchandise, achieve record sales across all three 2020/21 kits.
As part of the Everton for Change initiative – the Club’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and raising sustainability awareness – Everton’s home, away and third kits for the 2021/22 season will again be environmentally friendly, with the Blues becoming the first club to launch a kit featuring hummel’s ECO8 technology, meaning each shirt is manufactured from high-performing polyester produced from up to eight recycled plastic bottles.
The authentic nod to the ‘Black Watch’ kit of 1881/82 – the third season of Everton’s existence – comes following fan calls for the revered strip to be replicated and to celebrate the Club’s role as a pillar of the community for more than 140 years. The original strip was worn for home matches – then a series of friendlies and local cup fixtures played on Stanley Park – with Everton not adopting its famous royal blue jersey until 20 years later in 1901.
hummel’s famous chevrons and logo will be tonal grey in colour, ensuring a design that is a true reflection of the original.
The goalkeeper kit is a classic green and again comes with short-sleeves following consultation with the Club’s First-Team goalkeepers.
Alan McTavish, Commercial Director at Everton, said: “We are excited to be launching the first of three new kits on the back of what was a fantastic first year of our partnership with hummel.
"Last year's campaign celebrated the strong bond between the football club and our diverse fan base and, once again, hummel has demonstrated its understanding of Everton and Evertonians with a kit that pays homage to our formative years.
"The classic-looking retro design leans on the deepest roots of our history but, crucially, is still contemporary in style, cutting edge in terms of its sustainable technology and – following three record-breaking kits last season - sure to strike a chord with our fans across the globe.”
Boasting a classic collar with rib inserts, the new away shirt balances retro and modern styles, offering a comfortable fit for players and fans alike.
Mesh panelling under the arms and down the sides works alongside vents at the bottom of the shirt to ensure breathability and enable high-level performance, while the polyester created using hummel’s ECO8 technology gives the kit a rich, silk-like feel.
Allan Vad Nielsen, hummel’s CEO, said: “We are so proud of our association with Everton Football Club and of everything that was achieved in the first 12 months of our technical partnership. Like last year, we wanted to produce a kit that would resonate with fans and be truly, authentically Everton.
"Going back to the Club's earliest years and taking our inspiration from something as iconic as the 'Black Watch' kit to illustrate the longevity and togetherness of the Everton Family just made sense.
“We hope Evertonians enjoy this kit and we look forward to seeing them back in the stands, wearing the new colours, celebrating victories as one.”
Danny Downs, UK General Manager for Fanatics, said: “Since the start of this partnership with hummel, we’ve been blown away by the designs they have produced for Everton, and we saw last year that fans were also impressed as they came out in force and showed their support for the team with record sales of each kit.
“It’s also no surprise to us that Everton is the first football club to wear shirts made with the new hummel ECO8 technology; the Club is one of the most innovative and forward-thinking in the Premier League and we’re excited to make the shirt available for Everton fans, wherever they might be in the world.”
All three 2021/22 kits will be part of Everton and hummel’s #AsOne campaign, which will recognise the togetherness of the Club’s fan base and build excitement for the expected return of supporters to stadiums in significant numbers next term. The Club’s 2021/22 home and third kits will be launched later this summer.
Following feedback from supporters on last season’s range, an XXL youth kit has been introduced for 2021/22, while the crests on all three 2021/22 kits will be woven with an embroidered finish.
The Club’s Principal Partner, Cazoo, will once again feature on the front of both adult and junior shirts.
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who took part in a photoshoot to launch the new away kit alongside teammates Lucas Digne and Ben Godfrey, added: “I know last year’s kit was very popular and I’m sure the fans will love this one, too.
“When you join this Club you are immediately made aware of its history and standing in the game – but also about the ambition, innovation and drive to take things forward.
“That’s what this kit represents. It’s a nod to the past but it’s cool, current, and uses the latest eco technology. I can’t wait to walk out in this kit and hopefully see Evertonians packing out away ends like we know they always do.”
Everton’s 2021/22 away kit is available to pre-order now and will be on sale in store and online from Friday 4 June. To pre-order the kit, items from the training range or see size and pricing guides, visit evertondirect.com.
Supporters can also pre-order in store at Everton One or Everton Two to collect from the same store from Friday 4 June.
