What The Papers Say - 20 May

Spanish newspaper Sport reports that Everton are in the race for Real Betis full-back Emerson Royal this summer.

The Brazilian is aiming to return to Barcelona next season and is in the process of obtaining a Spanish passport to help make this happen.

However, the report claims Emerson wishes to be a regular starter and the Blues could potentially meet this request, should the deal with the Catalan club fall through.

Arsenal have also shown interest in the 22-year-old and could face competition for his signature.

Football Insider spoke with former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny who claims the Blues should spend up to £50million on a creative player this summer.

Kenny argued it could be difficult for Everton to go above that price following the financial impact COVID-19 has had on clubs across the country.

“I watched Everton at the weekend against Sheffield United and they really struggled," he told the publication.

“You could tell they needed that creative spark. They were desperate for a number 10. They probably need to spend £50m, but I don’t know if we’ll see it.

“With everything that’s gone on with Covid, there are a lot of clubs where the budgets will be a bit more awkward.

“It’s a tough one because the whole impact of the pandemic has been huge.

“It depends on whether the owner wants to get the money out of his own pocket. A lot of clubs have been hit hard. They need to be careful.”

Goodison News follows up on reaction from last night's win over Wolves and draws quotes from Match of the Day.

Gary Lineker and Danny Murphy piled on praise for Everton forward Richarlison who headed home the winning goal of the evening.

It was his first goal after a drought of 11 games and Lineker suggested the Goodison Park support inspired the players to victory.

Murphy in agreement with the BBC presenter expanded on this.

“He was really good, maybe it was what Everton needed," Murphy said.

“He was bang at it today, he’s always been a threat in the air from set-plays and of course that’s where he got his goal, that was a super header.

“They’ve missed that, Everton.

“When he’s like this he’s really direct and plays with a great tenacity and he’s creative, so he should be scoring more goals with the ability and talent he’s got.”

“Today he was the best player.”
