Coleman: Everton Fans Made The Difference

Skipper reflects on deserved victory over Wolves.

Seamus Coleman says the returning Evertonians’ vocal backing “made the difference” after the Blues beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at an electric Goodison Park on Wednesday evening.

Richarlison’s superb 48th-minute header earned Carlo Ancelotti’s team a deserved win in front of 6,500 supporters at the Grand Old Lady.

Coleman, who made his 350th Toffees appearance in the game, revealed the squad’s collective desire to deliver a performance Everton fans could be proud of.

The Irishman’s typically combative and energetic display was mirrored throughout the Everton team, with the Blues’ collective effort highlighted by the fact they ran 10 kilometres more than their Wolves counterparts.

“We can’t underestimate the difference the fans made tonight,” said Coleman.

“We’ve been crying out for them all season. We’re disappointed with our home form but it’s so great to see the fans back.

“It’s a sign of things to come, hopefully, and they make a difference to our performances, without a shadow of doubt.

“They have every right to be frustrated with us, especially our home form. But today was a separate occasion. We made that clear before the game. It was about us doing it for our supporters.

“Everyone has had a tough time of it recently and it’s a relief for the fans to be here, I’m sure.

“It was up to us to put on a performance – that can just be about running around and showing you care. That’s what we did.”

ANCELOTTI ON CITY TASK AFTER EVERTONIANS INSPIRE WOLVES WIN

Blues beat Wolves to remain in European contention.

The victory moves Everton back up to eighth in the table and ensures the Blues remain in the hunt for European qualification heading into the final day of the season.

Everton conclude their season at Manchester City and, while Coleman acknowledges the Blues face a tough examination, he is hopeful the team can carry momentum from a joyous night at Goodison into the Etihad Stadium clash.

“It was a battling display [against Wolves] and we deserved the win,” he added.

“We had a few chances to win by even more.

“Our confidence was a bit low going into the game, so to get the win was important.

“It gives us a bit of chance going into the last game. We know Manchester City are champions but we’ll give it a good go.”
