Pickford On What Villa Draw Means For Everton

Jordan Pickford says Everton remain firmly in contention for a European spot after Thursday’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa – but admitted the Blues’ frustration they could not convert an improved second-half performance into victory.

The draw sees Everton move level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, who currently occupy seventh place – a position that would bank a spot in the inaugural Europa Conference League. In a congested Premier League table, the Blues are just two points behind West Ham United in fifth.

Everton created most of the game’s best chances at Villa Park – the Blues had five shots on target compared to the home side’s two – with top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin coming closest to making a decisive breakthrough.

The England striker headed powerfully at goal from close range from Lucas Digne’s cross three minutes from time – but saw his effort superbly saved by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Asked whether he believed Everton’s display was worthy of maximum points, Pickford said:
“I think in the second half we were better and we created a few chances.

“The Villa keeper had some good saves and they made a few good blocks. I think in the second half, definitely [we did enough].

“In the first half, we didn’t quite get going – but we were still in the game. And we gave ourselves the best chance of getting a result by keeping a clean sheet and having a solid base at the back.

“I think we grew in belief in the second half. We started to find those gaps – Gylfi, Richarlison and Dominic started getting chances. We just needed one of our chances to go in.

“We’d like to have won, of course, but we take a point and that could be crucial at the end of the season.

“We’ve got three big games now and it starts against Sheffield United on Sunday – and we’ll go for the win.”

DOUCOURE ON HIS EVERTON RETURN

Midfielder insists point can help Blues achieve European goal.

Pickford sustained his impressive form with another faultless display at Villa.

While rarely troubled as Everton kept Villa’s attack at arm’s length for extended periods, Pickford was alert and composed when called into action – commanding his penalty area and confidently claiming crosses.

The goalless draw means Everton have now equalled the Club’s Premier League record of nine away clean sheets in a season, set in 2008/09.

“I’m doing well and I feel in a great place,” added Pickford.

“For me, I just want to keep that momentum for Everton and keep doing my best for the Club.

“Then it’s about being ready for the Euros with England if called upon.”
