Everton Boss Kirk on Scott Future And Final WSL Game

Everton conclude their Women’s Super League campaign this weekend as the team travel to face Manchester United on Sunday (2.30pm BST).

Willie Kirk’s side will aim to finish their season on a high as they take on the hosts who are positioned just above the Toffees in fourth place.

Manager Kirk spoke to the media on Friday and the key quotes are listed below…

Kirk on his desire to keep Jill Scott beyond this campaign…

I think that’s ongoing between the two clubs, in terms of what might happen, what might not happen.

Certainly from a head coach’s point of view, I’d love to keep her here.

She’s added so much to what we do on the training pitch and in matches.

I think Jill’s enjoyed it. Hopefully she makes the Olympics squad. I’m pretty sure she will.

She’s got so much experience. Still so effective on the pitch.

I think it would be a shock to everyone if she never made the Olympics squad.

Obviously that was part of her reason to go out on loan and we have benefited from her experience and high standards.

I’d love to keep Jill here but there’s a long way to go before we get to that stage.

The Everton boss touched on further recruitment in the summer…

I always think we’re quite far ahead with our recruitment.

We work continuously on our recruitment in terms of identifying players and identifying areas of the squad that we want to improve.

There is always a natural turnover within the squad but then you’ve got other decisions you need to make in terms of; do we give new contracts? Do we extend contracts? Which players do we bring in?

We’re quite far down the line with a lot of that.

We’ve probably got two or three players secured already in terms of new signings.

I can imagine that could be as many as five or six come the start of next season.

We’ll be working hard over the summer with Sarvar, Aaron and everyone else who is involved in that recruitment process.

We’ll have a stronger squad next year than we did this year. Just like we’ve had a stronger squad this year than we did last year.

It’s just part of our constant evolution I think as a team.

On our final opponents of the WSL campaign…

United have shown this year how good a team they are and how they have had similar objectives to us. To get as close to the top three as possible.

They’ve managed to do really well.

At one point they were in a chance that they would have been league contenders at one stage.

They’ve fallen out of that and they’ve missed out on Europe, which I’m sure will be hurting them because I think that was a big objective for them.

They’re a good team and it’s a game we’re looking forward to.

I think it’s a cracking game to finish off our league campaign.

Kirk discusses the challenges of the season…

I think it’s just making sure our standards continue to increase.

That our ambitions are continuing to move forward. That we’re continuing to evolve as a team, and I think we’ve done that.

I’ve been vocal in the past that we’ve probably not taken as many points as I would have liked.

There’s a number of draws that I feel should have been victories. There’s a number of defeats that should have been draws.

Statistically, we’ve still overachieved in terms of our points on the board, which is good to see.

I think we’ll be somewhere between 15 to 25 per cent overachieving depending on Sunday’s result.

That’s good to see but I’m very ambitious and I want to close that gap as soon as possible.

There has been progress. I think the run to the FA Cup final was very pleasing and hopefully we can finish the season off with two big victories.

The one in front of us is the league and to take three points on Sunday would be a very good way to finish.
