Stoppage-Time Penalty Thwarts Everton

Everton were left frustrated as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal in the final home game of the Women’s Super League campaign.

Katie McCabe gave the visitors a first-half lead before Megan Finnigan headed home to equalise in the second. However, a last-minute penalty saw Kim Little win all three points for the visitors.

Following a goalless afternoon last weekend against West Ham United, Willie Kirk’s side looked to go toe-to-toe with third-placed Arsenal.

Not a great deal could separate the two sides, with chances in front of goal limited at both ends of the park.

Despite pressure on the visitors in the opening quarter, it was Arsenal who had the first clear-cut chance of the game.

Caitlin Foord received possession inside the area on the left before curling an effort towards the top-right corner. However, Sandy MacIver’s palm was enough to dip the ball over the bar after 13 minutes.

Arsenal took the lead nine minute later.

McCabe broke into the box along the left side before dinking the ball over MacIver for it to arrive in the far corner of the net.

The Toffees found their equaliser after 74 minutes.

Izzy Christiansen controlled the ball from a throw-in and delivered an excellent ball into the area. Defender Finnigan rose highest and fired the header into the far-right corner to level things up.

Everton looked to be in the ascendancy as the visitors found themselves under pressure for the final 20 minutes.

And manager Kirk’s side were on course for a point against the north London club until McCabe was brought down inside the area with the referee pointing to the spot four minutes into stoppage time.

Little stepped up and sent the ball into the right side of goal with MacIver diving the opposite way.

Focus now turns to trying to end the league campaign on a high with a trip to Manchester United next Sunday.
