Sigurdsson On Key Positives Despite Frustrating Draw

Gylfi Sigurdsson admitted Everton’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Friday night “feels like two points dropped” after a purposeful and expressive display from the Blues at Goodison Park.

Sigurdsson struck twice against his former club – the first a penalty and his second a sumptuous left-footed effort – to turn the game on its head after Harry Kane had put the visitors in front.

Kane’s 68th-minute goal levelled the scores again and, while Everton regrouped and created chances to score a late winner, the points were shared.

Sigurdsson goals were the standout moments of an impressive all-round display from the Icelander, who linked up well with exceptional playmaker James Rodriguez throughout.

The pair were influential as Everton carved our numerous opportunities – Carlo Ancelotti’s side had seven shots on target compared to Spurs’ three.

Everton also had more possession and had double the amount of corners of the away team (6-3).

“We’re satisfied with the performance but disappointed not to take the three points,” Sigurdsson said.

“Especially with the chances we had, it feels like we dropped two points.

“In our last home game against Crystal Palace [a 1-1 draw on Easter Monday], I don't feel we played as well as we did tonight, even though we created a lot of chances in that game, too.

“I thought the performance, the defending and the pressing was a lot better tonight.

“We did a lot of work during the week – even though we didn’t have a lot of time after the Brighton game [on Monday].

“I felt the way we set up defensively worked fantastically and we managed to win a lot of balls in their half, which gave us a lot of chances to score – but we were just missing that little bit of quality at the end to finish the game off.”

ANCELOTTI: DISAPPOINTING RESULT, NOT PERFORMANCE

Everton manager praises "best Goodison display of the season" as he insists European hopes still alive.

Sigurdsson’s double took his tally to eight goals for the season.

The 31-year-old showcased his immaculate technique for his second goal of the game, rifling an unstoppable first-time strike beyond Hugo Lloris after a fine run and cross from substitute Seamus Coleman.

“The ball from Seamus was perfect,” Sigurdsson explained.

“I could see there was defender right in front of me, so I tried to get a good contact. It was just about keeping the ball down and hitting the goal.

“Luckily, I connected really well and it was nice to see it in the back of the net.

"We had enough chances to win the game."
