What The Papers Say - 2 March

Reaction and analysis from Everton’s 1-0 victory over Southampton features across Tuesday’s local and national newspapers.

The win lifts seventh-placed Everton to within two points of Champions League qualifying positions and with a game in hand on the teams above them in the table.

The Daily Mail features quotes from Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, who said: “It will be a dream to be in the top four at the end of the season.

“We are quite close, if we win Thursday [at West Bromwich Albion], but the decision is long - we have to stay in our goal which is to play Europa League next season.”

The Daily Mirror praises a “controlled” performance from the Blues against Southampton, adding Ancelotti’s team were “good value for the win”.

The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, underlined the importance of Everton following up their Merseyside derby win at Anfield with another victory – “this was not as memorable a win, or even especially pretty, but in terms of its timing, context and endeavour it carried as much heft”.

The Liverpool Echo highlights Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s “classy” display at Goodison Park.

“He wasn't really called into action until a brilliant stop denied Jannik Vestergaard right at the death,” writes journalist Adam Jones. “He claimed crosses into the box well, made punches under pressure and some of his distribution was excellent.”

Richarlison struck the only goal against the Saints – his fifth strike in as many games – and the Brazilian’s performance also earns praise in the Echo.

“Richarlison's performance was much more than his goal,” reports the local read. “He worked absolutely tirelessly for his side right up until he was substituted towards the end of the game in place of Joshua King.”
