Sigurdsson: On To The Next One

Gylfi Sigurdsson called on Everton to focus on their next game at West Bromwich Albion in three days’ time after preserving their European ambitions courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton at Goodison.

Richarlison’s ninth-minute goal proved the difference as the Blues followed up their 2-0 Merseyside derby victory at Anfield with a first league triumph on home soil in six matches.

Everton remain seventh in the Premier League but are now just two points off fourth-placed West Ham United, with a game in hand.

And with a trip to Sam Allardyce’s West Brom up next on Thursday, Sigurdsson – whose pinpoint through ball set up Richarlison’s winner against Southampton – quickly turned his attention to The Hawthorns.

Asked what Everton are looking at this season after their latest success, Sigurdsson replied: “The next game. It’s as simple as that. It’s obviously fantastic to get the three points tonight but tomorrow we’re back in and preparing for the next game.

“It’s always nice to get three points and really good to back it up after a good win at Anfield. Defensively we were really good and it was perfect to back it up.”

ANCELOTTI: EVERTON TEAMWORK WAS KEY

Blues boss reflects on deserved 1-0 victory over Southampton at Goodison.

Sigurdsson wore the captain’s armband against Southampton and created three chances in the first half alone, his slide pass freeing Richarlison to round Fraser Forster and tuck home the winner.

It was the Brazilian’s fifth goal in as many matches and Sigurdsson praised a job well done from the 23-year-old, while saluting the Blues’ backline for limiting the visitors to just one shot on target all night.

“As a striker, you go through spells when you score three in three and five in five but then you might go a few games when you’re not scoring,” added Sigurdsson. “He [Richarlison] just kept going, worked as hard as he’s always done and we knew he that he was going to score goals.

“Jordan was very good, make a couple of great saves. I thought the back four were fantastic, dealing with their corners, set pieces and balls into the box. Overall, we defended really well.”
