What The Papers Say - 11 February

Unsurprisingly, Thursday’s media is dominated by reaction to Everton’s incredible 5-4 FA Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The BBC brands the encounter, which saw the Blues come from behind to later take the lead on three separate occasions, an “FA Cup classic”.

Substitute Bernard eventually struck the telling blow in the first period of extra-time - with the consensus being it was a just reward for Carlo Ancelotti’s side on a night their grit and determination booked a first quarter-final berth in the competition since 2016.

BBC’s Chief football writer Phil McNulty wrote: “This was perhaps [Ancelotti’s] finest moment since coming to Everton, his side - without the injured James Rodriguez, Andre Gomes and Jordan Pickford - showing remarkable energy and spirit to outlast their visitors.”

Writing in the Guardian, Andy Hunter noted: “José Mourinho spent much of his night at Goodison Park open-mouthed and struggling to comprehend both Tottenham’s failure to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals or to defend.

"Everton’s spirit, defiance, industry and ruthless precision provided the answer. Carlo Ancelotti’s side march on following a classic cup tie that had everything except the frenzied crowd it deserved."

The Liverpool Echo, meanwhile, awarded their highest player ratings to Abdoulaye Doucoure and Tom Davies, with both earning a score of 8 out of 10 for their efforts in midfield.

Of Davies, who was voted evertonfc.com’s man of the match by supporters and earned the post-match praise of assistant boss Duncan Ferguson, the Echo wrote: “Everton's best player even when the side had started the game poorly. He was constantly showing for the ball, displayed some great passing ability again and was right up for a battle in midfield from the first whistle. Another excellent and energetic midfield display.”

The Echo also suggests, however, that Everton’s top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin - who hit his 50th Club goal against Spurs - is now a doubt for Sunday’s visit of Fulham after going off with a hamstring problem early in the second half.

Finally on last night’s game, Ferguson jokes in the Daily Mail that Blues boss Ancelotti has “seen it all before” after much was made on social media of the Italian’s calm reaction to Bernard’s winner.

Ancelotti was shown on television casually blowing on a coffee while his staff around him - including Ferguson - jumped in celebration.

Everton and Celtic are tracking the progress of Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland Under-19 international Tyreik Wright, who is out of contract at the end of the season, according to the Daily Mail

Speedy winger Wright, 19, is currently enjoying his first taste of senior football having been loaned out to League Two Walsall last month and has quickly impressed, setting up two goals in his first two appearances.

And the Daily Star is among the papers to pay tribute to former Everton goalkeeper Dai Davies, who has passed away at the age of 72 following a battle with cancer.

Everton’s players wore black armbands on Wednesday night in honour of Wales international Davies, whose career also saw him represent Swansea City, Wrexham, Tranmere Rovers and Bangor City.
