Calvert-Lewin On Everton's Hunger To 'Go All The Way' In Cup

Dominic Calvert-Lewin declared Everton’s hunger to “go all the way” in the FA Cup after scoring in the Blues’ comprehensive 3-0 fourth-round victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday night.

Calvert-Lewin applied the finishing touch after a fine run and cross from Andre Gomes midway through the first half to put Everton in front.

The Blues played with conviction, skill and invention throughout and – after a sustained spell of pressure – Richarlison’s header extended Everton’s advantage just before the hour mark.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side soon made it 3-0 when Yerry Mina emphatically headed home to ensure the Toffees’ progress to the fifth round.

The game also saw Everton history made, with 16-year-old full-back Thierry Small becoming the Club’s youngest player when he was substituted on alongside fellow teenage debutant Tyler Onyango with five minutes to play.

England striker Calvert-Lewin was making his first appearance since New Year’s Day after a spell out with a hamstring injury.

His goal was his 15th in 20 Everton appearances this term.

“I’ve worked hard to get back to fitness as quick as I have done,” said Calvert-Lewin.

“It’s nice to be back in the goals and to win the game.

“I need to be there when the ball flashes across that area [in the six-yard box]. That’s where I’m at my best and I need to make sure I’m on the move.

“I’m glad I was there tonight to put it in.

“All-round, it was solid performance, and now it’s onto the next one.

“The FA Cup is very important for us. It’s a chance to bring silverware to this club, which we’ve been working hard to do.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to go all the way.”

Everton’s next FA Cup opponents will be determined on Monday night, when Tottenham Hotspur lock horns with Wycombe Wanderers with a fifth-round tie against Everton at Goodison at stake.

Calvert-Lewin explained the importance of Everton’s strong mentality in the win over Wednesday.

And the boyhood Sheffield United fan also admitted netting against the Owls was extra special.

“We went 1-0 up but you know you’re never safe when that is the score,” he added.

“We knew we had to score the next goal. That’s what we did, we got the cushion and we could relax into the game more.

“If it goes the other way, you can make it very difficult for yourself.”

He added: “It was great to get back playing again, especially against them as I grew up as a Sheffield United fan!

“I scored at couple at their place the last time we played [a 2-0 Carabao Cup win in September 2019], so to score the first again tonight felt good.”
