In-form striker Ellis Simms has explained how the elite-level coaching he receives at Everton has been central to his impressive progress.

Simms has hit six goals in just seven Premier League 2 matches for Everton Under-23s so far this season and will aim to sustain his exceptional form when the young Blues face Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Friday afternoon (1pm).

As well as shining for the Under-23s this term, 19-year-old frontman Simms has also trained regularly with Everton’s First Team.

He says the depth of knowledge possessed by the First Team and Under-23s coaching staff means he is in an ideal environment to learn his trade.

“Ever since I went up to the Under-23s, [manager] David Unsworth has always pushed me and tried to get the best out of me,” Simms told evertonfc.com.

“Training is intense and he always tries to help me. He’s a very good manager.

“He’s pushed me and I’ve tried to learn as much as I can from him and apply it to my games and in training.

“I also do a lot of finishing drills with Franny Jeffers [Under-23s coach], which helps me a lot come matchday when I’m in the position to score.

“With the First Team, obviously it’s amazing to be around someone like Carlo Ancelotti, who is a legendary manager. It’s an honour to be around him.

“Duncan [Ferguson, Everton assistant manager] also helps me in developing my overall game.

“He was the same position as me, and he gives me tips on things like holding the ball up, making runs in behind, and heading.

"It's great to learn from him.”
