Captain Tosun The Match-Winner For Turkey

Cenk Tosun struck what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot as Turkey edged 10-man Russia 3-2 in an entertaining UEFA Nations League encounter at Fenerbahce's Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

Tosun captained his country on the occasion of his 44th cap, playing 80 minutes and registering his 18th international goal.

It was a second strike in five days for the Everton forward after he netted in a 3-3 friendly draw with Croatia - again from the penalty spot - on Wednesday.

Needing to win to keep their chances of topping Group B3 alive, Turkey fell behind when Russia winger Denis Cheryshev opened the scoring 11 minutes in.

However, the game turned in the hosts' favour when defender Andrey Semenov took out last man Tosun on 24 minutes and was shown a straight red card.

Turkey quickly made the most of their numerical advantage as first Kenan Karaman headed in from close range on 26 minutes, then Leicester City's Cengiz Under found the bottom corner six minutes later.

Tosun made it 3-1 seven minutes into the second half after Ozan Tufan was fouled in the box, and though Daler Kuzyaev struck to half the deficit, Turkey held on to close the gap on group leaders Russia to two points.

Hungary's 1-1 draw with Serbia in the same group means Turkey could still secure promotion out of League B if they can win in Hungary on Wednesday and Russia fail to secure victory in Serbia.
