Turner: 'We Gave It Everything At Wembley And We'll Come Back Stronger'

Club captain Dan Turner expressed her pride after Everton “gave everything and put our bodies on the line” in Sunday’s FA Cup final, as she echoed boss Willie Kirk’s call for the team to use the experience to drive them to future success.

Everton were beaten 3-1 after extra time by Manchester City in a fiercely competitive clash at Wembley Stadium.

With the scores locked at 1-1 and with just nine minutes remaining, the game looked set to be heading for a penalty shootout. City made a vital breakthrough through sub Georgia Stanway, however, before Janine Beckie scored with the final kick of the game as Everton committed bodies forward in search of a last-gasp leveller.

Everton’s quality in possession and impressive tactical discipline was supplemented by a relentless work-ethic throughout the 120 minutes.

Skipper Turner saluted the collective effort of the Toffees squad and staff.

“We gave it absolutely everything,” she told evertontv.

“From the first until the last minute, we dug in and gave everything we could on that pitch.

“We’ll try to use this experience to fuel us to come back here to Wembley.

“We put our bodies on the line and we were on our last legs at the end.

"I can’t fault anyone. Those that started, came on as subs and those that didn’t…we’re all in it together.

“I’m so proud of all the players and the staff.”

HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON WOMEN 1-3 MAN CITY (AET)

Gauvin on target but Everton beaten at Wembley.

Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright and CEO Denise Barrett-Baxendale were in attendance as the Blues contested a first FA Cup final since 2014.

In normal circumstances, they would have been joined at Wembley by a vibrant following of Evertonians, but COVID-19 restrictions meant the game was held behind closed doors.

Turner explained, however, how the squad received a deluge of supportive messages from fans across the globe.

“The backing we’ve had has been incredible,” she said.

“We’ve had fans supporting us from Merseyside and all over the UK, as well from America, Malaysia and lots of other places.

“The girls felt that [support] before the game and I want to say a massive thank you to all our fans.”
