Catering Firm Steps Up Blue Family Donation To Curb Holiday Hunger

Liverpool-based catering firm Relish has been a strong supporter of Everton in the Community’s Blue Family initiative during the coronavirus pandemic with weekly donations of pre-prepared meals to feed some of the charity’s most vulnerable participants.

And during half-term, Relish has teamed up with local food producers and wholesalers Saka and Golden Dragon to donate a further 2,200 meals to the Club’s official charity to distribute to local children to help tackle holiday hunger across the Blue Mile.

Since May, Relish has been donating hundreds of meals each week to Blue Family to help those most in need with food parcels being delivered to elderly participants from the charity’s Pass on the Memories programmes as well as being distributed to low-income families living across Liverpool 4.

This week’s increased donation from Relish is specifically catered for school-aged children from the socially deprived wards of Walton, Anfield, Everton and Kirkdale, with deliveries also made to participants from Prescot and Old Swan.

In addition to feeding Everton in the Community participants, the easy-to-cook pre-prepared meals will be based on typical school lunches and have also been donated to local community groups including Walton Youth Project, Positive Futures, Joseph Lappin Centre, Opening Doors Project and Rotunda and Kirkdale Boxing Club.

Since May, Relish has donated 6,500 meals to Everton in the Community and the kind-hearted catering firm’s generosity shows no sign of slowing down with Relish Directors Kiara Mako and Chris Foulkes having already pledged their commitment to donating a further 500 meals a week to Blue Family until the New Year, equating to a total of 11,000 meals with a total monetary value of £44,000.

Speaking about the half-term meals provision from Relish, Sako and Golden Dragon, Everton in the Community Neighbourhood Manager Sarah Atherton said: “This donation has made a significant difference in feeding our local young people, aged 5-19, during October half-term.

"All beneficiaries attend wider EitC projects and come from some of the most-in-need families within the Blue Mile. Everyone has been delighted with the meals they have received and this has alleviated a large amount of financial pressure on their families.

"We are so very grateful to the team at Relish for their continued support and for bringing Sako and Golden Dragon on board this half-term to help us support even more people in need.”

Relish Director Kiara Mako added, “When we learned about the government decision to not provide free meals to school-aged children during half-term, we knew we had to do something and Saka and Golden Dragon were more than happy to answer the call to help their local community.

"These meals are being aimed at the children who need them most and we hope they will help take away the extra financial burden from families at this difficult time.

“This is just one of the steps that Relish is taking to try to improve the lives of people in our local community. We have several other charitable initiatives currently being worked on and will continue to donate 500 meals weekly to the incredible team at Everton in the Community who are true heroes of this city.”

Established in South Liverpool in 2010, Relish has built up a reputation for delivering the best locally sourced and inspired foods and specialises in catering and events as well as providing catering for The Venue at the iconic Royal Liver Building, the home of Everton’s headquarters.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, Relish have temporarily amended their operation to deliver their industry-leading brand of catering to the people in businesses, care facilities and hospitals who have found their usual supply lines interrupted by the restrictions we are all living under.
