Gordon On How Everton Will Learn From Saints Loss

Anthony Gordon declared his confidence Everton boast the character and quality to deliver an instant response after falling to a first defeat of the 2020/21 campaign at Southampton on Sunday.

The Toffees were beaten 2-0 at St Mary’s Stadium, with first-half goals from James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams earning the home team maximum points.

Everton remain top of the Premier League table, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side having won four and drawn one of their opening six matches.

Next up for the Blues is an away game at Newcastle United next Sunday, before Manchester United visit Goodison Park on Saturday 14 November.

“We’re disappointed,” Gordon said. "But, credit to them, they played really well and they got the result.

“We’re not a perfect team and we were going to lose a game at some point, but hopefully we can learn from it.

“We’ll definitely bounce back and we’ll learn from this.”

ANCELOTTI URGES EVERTON TO STAY POSITIVE DESPITE FIRST DEFEAT

Boss says Blues must look forward with “spirit and belief” after unbeaten run ends at St Mary's.

Gordon was introduced as a 58th-minute substitute at Southampton as Everton attempted to battle their way back into the game.

The match represented Gordon’s first Premier League appearance of the season.

He has featured in two Carabao Cup games, impressing in comprehensive victories over Salford City and Fleetwood Town.

The Academy graduate’s first action against Southampton was to play an intelligent reverse pass into fellow sub Bernard – the Brazilian then cut inside and was fractions away from finding James Rodriguez 10 yards from goal, only for a last-ditch interception to foil the Colombian.

Everton saw their hopes of mounting a comeback made all the more difficult, however, when Lucas Digne was sent off 18 minutes from time, and the Saints saw out the victory.

With Digne now facing a three-match suspension and Richarlison also unavailable for the next two games, Gordon outlined his belief the strong reserves of talent within the Everton squad can “step up”.

“It will be difficult without Lucas and Richarlison, as they are two of our top players," he said.

“They have been amazing at the start of this season.

“We’ll miss them but our squad depth can come into play and it’s a chance for other players to come in and perform.”
