Calvert-Lewin Wins Third Cap But England Beaten

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin came off the bench for the final 18 minutes to win his third England cap but was powerless to prevent Gareth Southgate’s side from suffering a Nations League defeat to Denmark on Wednesday.

Jordan Pickford, meanwhile, played his 28th game for his country on a disappointing night for the Three Lions at Wembley.

Manager Southgate’s side were aiming to complete a clean sweep of victories from October’s international break after defeating Wales last Thursday and beating world number one ranked team Belgium on Sunday.

But England’s task grew in size when centre-back Harry Maguire was sent off following a second booking on 31 minutes.

Christian Eriksen converted from the spot for the visitors four minutes later after Kyle Walker was penalised for a challenge on Thomas Delaney.

Denmark number one Kasper Schmeichel produced a wonderful one-handed stop to deny Mason Mount’s 66th-minute close-range header as 10-man England hunted an equaliser.

Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Marcus Rashford and operated off the left flank, was promptly involved to play a part in England winning a free-kick 20 yards from goal.

But the watchful Schmeichel tipped over Reece James’ rising dead-ball strike and when the visiting keeper was finally beaten by Conor Coady’s header in the closing minutes Denmark captain Simon Kjaer was astutely positioned to clear off the line.

Goalkeeper Pickford’s Everton understudy Jonas Lossl was an unused substitute for the Danes.

Lucas Digne responded to being restored to France’s starting line-up in Croatia by supplying a fabulous volleyed cross for Kylian Mbappe’s decisive goal 11 minutes from time.

Left-back Digne sat out a scoreless draw with Portugal after playing in his country’s 7-1 friendly blitzing of Ukraine last week.

The former Barcelona player returned in place of Lucas Hernandez of Bayern Munich and celebrated his 33rd cap with victory in Zagreb.

Current Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring on eight minutes but France were pegged back when ex-Everton midfielder Nikola Vlasic steered in a 64th-minute equaliser.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Mbappe connected with Everton player Digne's delivery to keep the French tied with Portugal on 10 points at the top of Nations League Group C.

Digne made way for Hernandez soon after his telling intervention.

Robin Olsen won his 40th international cap as Sweden went down to a 3-0 Nations League defeat in Portugal.

The Portuguese, winners of the first incarnation of this competition last year, hit the front through Bernardo Silva on 21 minutes.

Diogo Jota doubled the home team’s lead one minute before half-time in Lisbon and struck his second on 72 minutes to complete the scoring.

Goalkeeper Olsen joined Everton on a season-long loan from Serie A club Roma last week and will now link up with his new teammates at Goodison Park.

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, meanwhile, was rested from Iceland’s 2-1 Nations League defeat by Belgium in Reykjavic after completing 90 minutes in games against Romania and Denmark in the past six days.
