Sigurdsson The Hero As Iceland Keep Euro Hopes Alive

Gylfi Sigurdsson was the hero for Iceland as he hit two first-half goals against Romania to move his nation one step away from qualifying for the rearranged Euro 2020 tournament.

The Everton attacker's brace - his 23rd and 24th international goals on the occasion of his 75th cap - proved enough to secure a 2-1 win for the hosts, who will now face Hungary in the Path A final next month.

Sigurdsson, who played the full contest, opened the scoring in Reykjavik when his left-footed shot found the bottom corner from the edge of the box on 16 minutes.

He was at it again 11 minutes before the break, this time beating goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu with a brilliant low finish.

Alexandru Maxim converted from the penalty spot to give Romania hope on 63 minutes but Iceland held on to keep their bid to qualify for a third successive major tournament alive.

"It's a great feeling," said Sigurdsson. "It was very good to score two goals today and get us in a good position.

"It would have been a bit better to have had more control of the game in the end, but overall I felt we were in command.

"We have shown over the years that we are very good under pressure and somehow we always manage to hold a position like this to the end."

Should Iceland defeat Hungary - 3-1 victors over Bulgaria - they will go into a tough Group F for the tournament finals alongside Portugal, Germany and world champions France.

The European Championships are due to start on 11 June 2021, having been postponed due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier on Thursday, new Everton loan signing Robin Olsen was an unused substitute for Sweden's 2-1 friendly win in Russia.
