Calvert-Lewin Scores On 'Dream' England Debut

Dominic Calvert-Lewin said netting on his senior England debut was "the stuff of dreams" as his impressive goalscoring start to 2020/21 continued.

Calvert-Lewin was handed his Three Lions bow for Thursday's friendly against Wales - his reward for hitting nine goals in six matches at club level so far this season.

And it took the 23-year-old just 26 minutes to head in a pinpoint cross from Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish and set Gareth Southgate's side on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win at Wembley.

The contest saw three players register their first England goals, with Wolves centre-back Conor Coady and Southampton striker Danny Ings also getting on the scoresheet.

"Obviously it's a shame there's no fans here to celebrate it and obviously my family couldn't be here so it's bittersweet in that sense, but to score on my debut, it's the stuff of dreams," said Calvert-Lewin, who struck the winning goal for England against Venezuela in the Under-20 FIFA World Cup final in 2017.

"I've worked very hard to get here. It's felt like a long road but I'm very, very pleased to be here, to get the opportunity and to score on my debut."

Calvert-Lewin was withdrawn on 58 minutes at Wembley - a possible indication he will see more game time with UEFA Nations League fixtures against Belgium and Denmark to come in the next six days.

Everton defender Michael Keane played the full 90 minutes as he picked up his 11th cap, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was an unused substitute.

Asked about his early substitution, Calvert-Lewin said: "I don't know what that suggests but all I can say is I enjoyed the time I did play on the pitch and I'll be ready to step in if I'm needed.

"The lads have welcomed me in and I felt comfortable from the moment I walked through the door.

"Obviously that helps when you're stepping on to the pitch when you're getting to know the lads early doors. I just went out and the main objective was to enjoy myself."

As well as scoring his goal, Calvert-Lewin caught the eye with a series of typically industrious runs and impressed his new England manager.

"[He was] excellent, I thought really very good," said Southgate. "He had excellent presence, his runs are a threat, he presses well, he obviously took his goal well, so I thought he could be really pleased.

"He's in a really good vein of form, I think he's an all-round centre-forward, and I've always liked his general play [but] it's his goals that he's adding now that are making him another level of player."

England return to Wembley to take on Belgium on Sunday (5pm BST), before welcoming Denmark to the national stadium next Wednesday (7.45pm BST).Β
