Calvert-Lewin On Reasons Behind Everton's Stunning Start To Season

Dominic Calvert-Lewin says Everton’s sensational early-season form is the product of a “mentality and momentum shift” after the Blues beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2 on Saturday to record a seventh consecutive victory.

Red-hot striker Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring at Goodison Park with a soaring header – his ninth goal in just six games so far this term.

Brighton levelled through Neil Maupay but Yerry Mina restored Everton’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

James Rodriguez then netted a second-half brace to ensure Yves Bissouma’s stoppage-time strike was merely a consolation.

Everton have scored 24 goals from their seven matches in 2020/21, conceding just eight.

The Blues' seven-game winning streak represents the Club’s best start to a season since 1894.

“There’s been a mentality shift and a momentum shift around the place and that has been a big catalyst [for our form], as well bringing in the new players and the quality they’ve got,” said Calvert-Lewin.

“What they’ve added to the team has been crucial.

“We have gelled really well and the system we play suits us.

“In the second half [against Brighton] we didn’t play that well, to be honest.

“But we scored goals in the second half and the best teams win when they are not always on top. We dug in and limited their chances.

“We started the game well, though. On the whole, I think it was a solid performance again. We are feeling confident, creating chances and scoring goals."

Calvert-Lewin’s prolific goalscoring form was recognised with a first senior England call-up on Thursday.

The 23-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Three Lions’ upcoming matches against Wales, Belgium and Denmark.

"I'm thoroughly looking forward to going away with England," Calvert-Lewin added.

"It's something I've worked very hard for and dreamed about for a long time.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and I’m looking to go in and make my mark.

"I've got self-belief. I've always believed I could get here – I’ve never stopped working, listening and learning.

“It’s about age and maturity and learning from my past experiences, and now I’ve reaping the rewards.”

HIGHLIGHTS: EVERTON 4-2 BRIGHTON

Blues make it seven wins from seven.

Calvert-Lewin was nominated for September’s EA Sports Premier League Player of the Month award and was joined on the shortlist by Blues teammate James.

The striker explained why he is savouring the opportunity to play alongside the Colombian, who finished off two slick Everton moves against Brighton to put the game out of the south coast club’s reach.

"James is a top player,” Calvert-Lewin said.

“You can see when he gets on the ball, the quality he has got. He draws people in and opens space up for other players on the pitch.

“As a centre-forward, he creates chances and that’s all you can hope for.”

Calvert-Lewin also outlined the value James’ compatriot Mina offers the squad.

The centre-back netted his fourth Everton goal in the win over Brighton – and led a Macarena dance to celebrate his effort.

Calvert Lewin said: “It’s just Yerry, isn’t it?!

“He enjoys dancing and celebrating and enjoys his football. The energy he bring to the team is contagious.

“He’s great for the team.”
