Everton Sessions Q&A: Mason Owens

In May, with the UK in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Evertonians in the music industry united virtually to record tracks in isolation for a special fundraising event.

DMA’s, The Wombats, Circa Waves and many other bands featuring Blues helped raise almost £5,000 for Everton in the Community’s Blue Family outreach campaign during the one-hour show, broadcast live on Everton platforms. The donations directly helped those most vulnerable and in need during the pandemic.

Following on from the success of the Lockdown Sessions, we bring you the Everton Sessions – a series of performances from Evertonian artists and bands.

Our city of Liverpool is as renowned for its music as it is for football and the two often go hand-in-hand. And while continued restrictions on the live events industry are impacting on musicians and preventing them from performing to crowds, evertonfc.com seeks to highlight some of the talent our city and our fanbase has to offer.

First up, we have Mason Owens, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Liverpool…

Talk us through your journey in music so far…

I’ve been writing songs and playing guitar since my early teens and later went on to play bass in a few local bands including Rats and Eva and the Primeras.

My career as a solo artist began in November 2018. Since then, I’ve written a load of songs and performed all over the city.

I first started posting a few comical songs I’d written for a laugh on social media which ended up getting a decent-sized audience and got me a bit of a following.

Since then, I’ve signed to local indie label, Nifty Records, released a few tracks and started focusing on more serious stuff.

How did you become an Evertonian – and when?

Through the family. You’re born into it, aren’t you? You don’t change who you support!

What should you have been doing in 2020?

I had a load of gigs lined up that I was looking forward to, including a couple in Ireland, and we’ve had to postpone them. I’ve never played outside the city, let alone the country, so it would have been a great experience.

How has the pandemic and lockdown affected you as a musician?

Less gigs and less money – same boat as everyone really.

Career highlight so far?

I’m still in the early stages of my career, but I think I’ve done alright so far. I have received loads of support both from people in the city and beyond, which is a highlight in itself.

In terms of gigs, supporting Jamie Webster and Space with a set of my original tracks at a sold-out Liverpool Olympia was brilliant. So was signing my first recording contract with Nifty Records.

Favourite all-time Everton player and favourite current player?

Duncan Ferguson, all-time. In terms of the current squad, it’s been a good transfer window and I think I’m most excited about Abdoulaye Doucouré out of the new signings. It’s been a very promising start and hopefully it’s a sign of things to come this season under Carlo.

Rate your football ability out of 10...

Six.

Best Everton memory?

Phil Jagielka’s equaliser at Anfield or the 3-0 derby at Goodison in 2006.

For those yet to hear your music, who would you say it is for fans of?

Proper music.

What does the next year hold for you?

Tomorrow never knows. But, hopefully, loads more live shows and releasing a load more music, including my debut EP.
