Ancelotti On Factor Driving Everton Consistency Bid

Carlo Ancelotti says Everton are embracing the growing expectation around the Club in advance of trying to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Excitement generated by the signings of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure heightened following an opening day Premier League victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

Ancelotti, speaking at his pre-match press conference, was at pains to stress Everton must locate the consistency which has eluded them in recent campaigns.

And the manager insists his team’s bid to piece together extended runs of positive results is aided by revised views over what is possible at Goodison Park.

“The expectation gives us motivation,” said Ancelotti, who confirmed Seamus Coleman will start his 250th Premier League match this weekend.

“It is always important to have expectation because this puts more pressure on us.

“It is good to have pressure because it can give you more motivation in your job.

“The performance last week was really important, it gave us a lot of confidence for tomorrow.

“That is where we are focused, on trying to repeat the performance we had against Tottenham.

“The spirit in this moment is good and we want to keep the spirit high with a good result [against West Brom].

“I can say we have a good squad and for this reason we can get a result.

“We need consistency, this is what we missed last season.

“The victory against Tottenham was a victory for spirit not strategy.

“A lot of times we played with the same strategy but missed motivation, concentration and ambition.

“We have to want to be consistent in the future.

“It [ability to be consistent] is to do with mentality.

“How the players focus and concentrate and believe in what we are doing.”

Ancelotti swapped out 10 players for Everton’s midweek Carabao Cup victory over Salford City and confirmed he would maintain his rotation policy in the competition's initial stages.

The new trio of James, Doucoure and Allan, then, are all expected to line-up against West Brom after arriving to enhance dressing room belief and significantly contribute to Everton’s first win at Spurs in nearly 12 years.

Coleman, the longest-serving player in Everton’s starting XI last week by more than seven years, will definitely continue at right-back for the Baggies’ visit.

The Irishman, who turns 32 next month, can carry on until his 40th birthday, in the opinion of Ancelotti.

“He will start and so congratulations to him [for beginning his 250th top-flight game],” said Ancelotti, who insisted Coleman’s fellow right-back Jonjoe Kenny showed against Salford he can compete for a First-Team jersey.

“It is a great achievement.

“We are honoured to have him as captain in this team.

“Seamus can play until 40, he is still young.

“The new players are in good condition, they adapted well in the game against Tottenham.

“They trained well this week.

“I gave a rest to them and other players [against Salford], to prepare well for tomorrow’s game.

“In general, it is important to rotate the players, in the beginning.

“Nobody is 100 per cent fit [this early in a season].

“We can use training to improve their physical conditions.

“Allan and James have international experience, Doucoure played really well in the Premier League [with former club Watford].

“They brought more confidence to their teammates.”

West Brom are back in the Premier League after a two-year absence and visiting Goodison for the first time since a 1-1 draw in January 2018.

Manager Slaven Bilic, the former Everton centre-half, led the club to automatic promotion in his first season.

Bilic's side came unstuck in the opening game of their return, against Leicester, but Ancelotti expects to encounter a West Brom team still high on confidence following their successful 2019/20.

Whatever the away team throw at Everton, they will face a goalkeeper in Jordan Pickford aiming for a fourth straight clean sheet after following two shut outs for England by denying Spurs with an accomplished display.

“Jordan is confident in this moment," said Ancelotti.

“The fact he played in the national team gave him more confidence to start the season well.

“He is focused and had a fantastic performance against Tottenham.

“West Brom is a tough team.

“I know the manager and his style, he did really well with Croatia [as national team boss].

“It will be a difficult game,

“I hope we can have a good result but we will have to play at our best to win.

“The game plan doesn’t change [from Spurs].

“The most important part of the game was the spirit the team showed and that has to stay the same.

“West Brom will play in a different shape from Tottenham.

“We have to manage this but the idea is to play the same.”

Everton will host West Brom behind closed doors, the seventh successive competitive Goodison fixture played with no fans in the ground.

The Premier League and its clubs this week “urged Government to remain committed to the 1 October date for the controlled return of fans to sporting venues.”

“All people who love football wants fans to come back to the stadium but when it is safe and secure,” added Ancelotti.

“We have to follow the advice of the Government.

“With the games behind closed doors we are safe and secure because the Premier League did a great job.”
