Everton’s highly impressive opening day victory at Spurs earns widespread acclaim across Monday’s local and national newspapers.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the Blues’ match-winner as Carlo Ancelotti’s side deservedly took maximum points from the encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Daily Mail highlights how James Rodriguez mixed his undoubted quality with application on his Everton bow.

“His skill and ability is beyond question but it was pleasing to see he had the desire, too, standing firm in the face of some heavy challenges,” writes reporter Dominic King.

The Guardian’s Jonathan Liew heaps praise on each of Everton's debutants – highlighting Abdoulaye Doucoure’s “dynamism”, James’ “left foot of pure silk” and opining Allan was “probably the most effective of all”.

Liew adds: “Football fans are frequently accused of getting overexcited, but let’s turn the question around: if you’re an Everton fan, how is it remotely possible not to get excited about all this?”

In the Daily Star, Everton’s performance is described as “slick, tough and competitive, with their new-look midfield crunching into tackles and driving them forward”.

The Liverpool Echo carries quotes from Everton boss Ancelotti, who said the Blues’ display showed his team “can compete with everyone if we have the right spirit and the right attitude”.

Ancelotti explained: “I am satisfied with the performance of the team, it was brilliant. We were comfortable with the ball and comfortable without the ball. In the end, it was a deserved win."

Several national newspapers report on another victory for Everton Women on Sunday.

Willie Kirk’s Blues also emerged 1-0 winners against Spurs, with Izzy Christiansen’s 51st-minute header proving the difference at Walton Hall Park.

Everton have won both their opening games of the season and sit second in the WSL table, behind Arsenal on goal difference.
