Pickford Records Fourth Straight England Shutout

Jordan Pickford recorded his fourth successive England clean sheet and second in four days as Gareth Southgate’s side shared a 0-0 draw with Denmark on Tuesday.

Everton goalkeeper Pickford won his 26th international cap – all earned since he arrived at Goodison Park from Sunderland in summer 2017 – in the Nations League clash in Copenhagen.

Denmark aimed 11 shots at England’s goal but only two on target in an uneventful match, albeit the visitors nearly pinched a win in stoppage time when Harry Kane rounded Kasper Schmeichel but had his effort cleared off the line by centre-back Mathias Jorgensen.

Michael Keane, Everton's former Manchester United defender, was an unused substitute for England, who have four points from two Nations League matches following Saturday’s single-goal success in Iceland.

Manager Southgate’s side host Belgium and Denmark in the competition next month following a Wembley friendly date with Wales.

Pickford’s shutout on Tuesday was his 12th for England.

The 26-year-old’s Everton understudy Jonas Lossl was on the bench for Denmark.

Tom Davies won his 19th England Under-21 cap in a potentially critical 2-1 European Championship qualifying win in Austria.

England held a three-point advantage over Austria at the summit of qualifying Group 3 entering the game in Ried im Innkreis.

And manager Aidy Boothroyd's team planted one foot in the first phase of the finals – set for Hungary and Slovenia in March – courtesy of goals from Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah and Ben Godfrey of Norwich.

Austria halved the deficit when Barnsley striker Patrick Schmidt struck with half-an-hour remaining.

But England, who introduced Davies for Tottenham Hotspur’s Oliver Skipp on 80 minutes, successfully managed the closing stages to open up a six-point lead over their hosts with four games to play.

Lucas Digne, meanwhile, was given the night off by France as a repeat of the 2018 World Cup final against Croatia ended in an identical 4-2 scoreline in favour of Didier Deschamps’ team.

Everton left-back Digne started and finished Saturday’s 1-0 win away against Sweden, his 31st senior international appearance, but watched from the bench in Paris as France made it two Nations League wins from two matches.

Andre Gomes returned to Everton for treatment on a knock following Portugal’s win over Croatia at the weekend so missed out on Tuesday's visit to Sweden.

In midfielder Gomes’s absence it was the Cristiano Ronaldo show in Stockholm.

The Juventus phenomenon scored twice – in the act of breaking the deadlock he became the first European to reach a century of international goals – as Nations League champions Portugal beat Sweden 2-0 to maintain a 100 per cent start to their title defence.

Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia’s Portugal Under-21 team were set to meet their Belarus counterparts in a European Championship qualifier.

The game was postponed, however, after the visiting Belarusians reported multiple positive coronavirus tests in their camp.
