On This Day: Everton Cross The Mersey For 'Home' Clash

Everton played a home fixture ON THIS DAY in 2014… on the other side of the River Mersey.

Goodison Park was undergoing essential structural work and so the pre-season friendly with Celta Vigo was staged at Prenton Park, home of Tranmere Rovers.

Everton took the lead in the ninth minute through Aiden McGeady, who was alert inside the box after Steven Naismith had controlled a Leighton Baines centre. Sadly, that was as good as it got for the Blues and from there it became the Nolito show.

The Spanish international scored three goals before the half-hour to give Celta Vigo a 3-1 lead that they protected safely until the end of the game.

Popular defender Joseph Yobo left Everton ON THIS DAY in 2012.

The Nigerian international had given the Club almost ten years service and played 259 games, scoring 10 goals after signing from Marseille, initially on loan, in 2002.

He had forged excellent central defensive partnerships with David Weir, Alan Stubbs and Phil Jagielka during his time at Goodison and he played in the 2009 FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea.

But the arrival of Sylvain Distin and John Heitinga limited his time on the pitch and he signed for Fenerbahce of Turkey.

The Blues played the last game of their glamorous three-city tour of the USA ON THIS DAY in 2013.

Having already played Juventus in San Francisco and Real Madrid in Los Angeles, new manager Roberto Martinez took his side to Miami to face Valencia.

The brand-new blue and yellow away kit got its first airing but it didn’t bring Everton any luck as Valencia won the game 1-0.

Gerard Deulofeu made his first start for the Blues following his move from Barcelona, but Michel Herrero scored the only goal of the game in the second half to secure victory for the La Liga side.
