Rooney Returns For Ferguson Testimonial: On This Day

Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial took place at Goodison Park ON THIS DAY in 2015 as Everton played their final warm-up game of the summer.

Roberto Martinez's men hosted Villarreal and had Wayne Rooney back in blue, the striker given permission by Manchester United to take part.

The prospect of Rooney and Ferguson teaming up together in attack for Everton attracted a crowd of more than 34,000 – but the fans had to wait until the 84th minute for the big man to come off the bench.

Rooney himself had replaced new signing Tom Cleverley in the 75th minute.

Everton were already 2-0 down when Ferguson entered the fray but Tyias Browning powered home a late header for a consolation goal.

After having a tour of Indonesia cancelled at the last minute, Everton had to swiftly arrange a replacement fixture and they invited Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad to play a behind-closed-doors friendly at Goodison Park ON THIS DAY in 2012.

It was a useful runout for David Moyes’ men, who took the lead in the first half when Leighton Baines converted a penalty that had been awarded for a foul on Victor Anichebe.

Ludogorets earned a draw from the contest when Marcelinho took advantage of some defensive confusion to net a second-half equaliser.

Everton manager Colin Harvey broke the Club transfer record ON THIS DAY in 1988 when he paid West Ham United £2.5million for Tony Cottee.

The striker had been courted by both Everton and Arsenal but opted for Goodison Park.

Cottee got off to a flyer, scoring a hat-trick on his debut against Newcastle United, and he would eventually find the net 99 times for Everton in 241 appearances before rejoining West Ham in 1994.
