Trophy-Winning Striker Leaves Blues: On This Day

A brief but thoroughly memorable Everton career came to an end ON THIS DAY in 1985 when terrace hero Andy Gray was allowed to re-join Aston Vila.

Gray had helped the Blues to a period of incredible success and his swashbuckling centre-forward play had earned the lasting affection of the Goodison Park crowd.

However, despite scoring in the semi-final and final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup and forging an, at times, unplayable striking partnership with Graeme Sharp, Gray was sold in the summer of '85.

Howard Kendall had forked out a Club-record fee for Leicester City striker Gary Lineker and had informed Gray that he would no longer be first choice.

There was much dismay amongst Evertonians and although Lineker would go on to score 40 goals in the 1985/86 campaign, the Blues ended the following season without a trophy.

Everton progressed through to the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy ON THIS DAY in 2015 by beating Stoke City on penalties.

It was the opening game of the four-team Premier League tournament and it ended 0-0 at the Singapore National Stadium.

Both sides had chances to win the game before it went to a penalty shootout.

The decisive moment came when Marco van Ginkel saw his kick saved by Tim Howard with the score at 1-1.

Romelu Lukaku had already slotted home his penalty and subsequent successful kicks from Tom Cleverly, John Stones and Gerard Deulofeu left Phil Jagielka with the chance to repeat his heroics of Wembley 2009 and score the winner.

He did so, and Everton went through to play Arsenal in the final after the Gunners defeated a Singapore XI in the other semi-final.

Wayne Rooney scored his first ever senior goal for Everton ON THIS DAY in 2002.

Promoted directly from the youth team during the summer, Rooney came off the bench at half-time during the pre-season friendly with Austrian side SC Bruck and scored fourteen minutes later, brushing aside a strong challenge from a hefty defender before despatching a clinical finish past the keeper.

The Bruck stadium announcer declared Rooney the ‘new Alan Shearer’ as he trotted back to his own half after the goal!

Sean O’Hanlon and Tomasz Radzinski scored the other Everton goals in a 3-1 win, but it was the 16-year old who the travelling Evertonians dashed towards when the referee blew the final whistle.

Everton - Howard's Way tells the full story of Howard Kendall's glorious trophy-winning team in the 1980s and tales from Merseyside during that era.

All proceeds from the documentary will go to fund The People's Place, Everton's purpose-built mental health facility close to Goodison Park.
