Coleman: Players Must Realise Responsibility Of Representing Everton

Seamus Coleman emphasised the responsibility players must feel when representing Everton following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves, declaring: “Every time we go out and play for this Football Club it’s got to mean something - and it didn’t look that way today.”

The Blues saw their hopes of achieving European qualification this season ended on a disappointing afternoon at Molineux.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez opened the scoring with a penalty on the stroke of half-time, before strikes from Leander Dendoncker and Diego Jota ensured maximum points for the home side.

“We got beat by the better team today,” Coleman said.

“I think it was down to [the fact] they wanted it more, which I think is the biggest embarrassment for players, that’s it’s possible the other team wanted it more than you.

“It looked that way today - we were second best to everything.

“As individuals in the dressing room and as a Club, we need to be expecting better. We need to have a look at ourselves.

“Every time we go out and play for this Football Club, it’s got to mean something and - at Tottenham [a 1-0 defeat on Monday] and here today - it didn’t look that way.

“Sometimes you can look at the ins and outs of tactics or why we didn’t get the ball to the attacking players but sometimes it comes down to commitment and desire and wanting it more than the opposition.

“The lads really need to dig in, myself included, get our heads down or that won’t be good enough for this manager. There are no hiding places.

“It’s certainly not good enough for this Football Club and the way I’ve been brought up here.”

ANCELOTTI: PERFORMANCE NOT ACCEPTABLE

Everton manager demands different attitude from his players after 3-0 loss at Wolves.

Everton have three more matches before the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

Next up is a home clash with Aston Villa on Thursday (6pm). The Blues then take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday 20 July before concluding the campaign on Sunday 26 July when Bournemouth visit Goodison Park.

Coleman says the players must show “in training every day and on matchdays” they are worthy of being part of boss Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the future.

“We will move forward from here, because that won’t be good enough for this manager,” he added.

“He’s not going to put up with performances like this.

“He’s a top manager. I’m sure he has got his own thoughts about how things were today and have his own ideas in place.

“As a team, we need to be better.”
