Heitinga Reaches World Cup Final: On This Day

Everton defender John Heitinga became the second Everton player to reach a World Cup final ON THIS DAY in 2010.

Heitinga was in the Dutch side that defeated Uruguay 3-2 in a pulsating semi-final in Cape Town, South Africa.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben scored for the Dutch, who had future Everton keeper Maarten Stekelenburg between the sticks.

Diego Forlan and Maxi Pereira netted for Uruguay, who were without the suspended Luis Suarez.

It was the third time Holland had reached the World Cup final and Heitinga joined Ray Wilson in the exclusive Everton club.

One of the best utility players in Everton history left the Club for the first time ON THIS DAY in 1988.

Alan Harper was signed by Howard Kendall in the summer of 1983 and would eventually play 241 games for the Blues over two separate spells, scoring five goals – which included one in a Merseyside derby and one in an FA Cup semi-final.

The sensational form of the recognised starting XI in the glorious 1984/85 season limited Harper to only 10 league appearances but he featured far more regularly when the title was won again two years later.

Saluted by both supporters and teammates, Harper was a pivotal member of the squad who could play many positions on the park.

He left for Sheffield Wednesday on 6 July 1988 and returned from Manchester City in 1991, departing for the last time two years later to join Luton Town.

Everton - Howard's Way tells the full story of Howard Kendall's glorious trophy-winning team in the 1980s and tales from Merseyside during that era.

All proceeds from the documentary will go to fund The People's Place, Everton's purpose-built mental health facility close to Goodison Park.
