What The Papers Say – 15 June

Spanish publication Sport reckons Everton have offered €22m for Barcelona centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Frenchman Todibo is spending the second half of this campaign on loan in Germany with Schalke 04 but has become a “desired player” for Everton, says the paper.

Sport claims Everton and Barcelona have “long been in negotiations” over Todibo but the La Liga team want more than the Blues initially offered for their 20-year-old defender.

Calciomercato insists Everton are ready to pounce for Memphis Depay with the Dutch forward ready to reject new terms at Lyon.

Former Manchester United player Depay has excelled in France after transferring from Old Trafford three-and-a-half years ago.

He scored five goals in as many Champions League games this season and added another nine in 12 Ligue 1 starts before being struck down by a cruciate ligament injury in December.

Depay is apparently keen to move on and, in the opinion of Calciomercato, Everton and AC Milan are in pole position for the 26-year-old, who would reportedly cost €30m.

Monday’s Daily Mail says French club Nice will this week submit a bid of £2m plus add-ons for Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Ligue 1 season was curtailed in April, leaving Nice in fifth, one place outside European qualification.

Manager Patrick Vieira has identified fellow Frenchman Schneiderlin, who has played 88 games for Everton following a January 2017 move from Manchester United, as a player to help his side break into the top four, according to the Mail.

The same paper features a story on the logistics of Everton’s return to Premier League action on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are poised for a home meeting with Liverpool, more than three months after tackling Chelsea in Everton’s final game before the coronavirus shutdown.

The visitors to Goodison Park will reportedly change in makeshift dressing rooms stationed on the car park behind the Sir Philip Carter Park Stand.

Everton’s players, meanwhile, will apparently share Goodison’s home and away changing rooms.

Another national paper reckons Tottenham Hotspur have joined Everton and Arsenal in the chase for Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva.

Brazilian Silva will leave Paris whenever quarter-finalists PSG’s Champions League involvement reaches its conclusion.

Former employers AC Milan are also said to be keen on Silva but it is suggested Everton and north London pair Arsenal and Spurs all view the 35-year-old as the right man to “bolster their defensive lines”.

The Liverpool Echo expects Everton goalkeeper Jonas Lossl to complete this season in the Championship with Huddersfield Town.

Dane Lossl returned to old club Huddersfield on loan in January and is ready to extend a deal originally lasting until 30 June to enable him to feature in the Terriers’ final nine games this term.

Everton would then strike up a similar agreement with Maarten Stekelenburg, according to the Echo, Dutch keeper Stekelenburg staying at Goodison beyond the end of his current contract and available for the Blues’ closing nine Premier League fixtures.

News of Everton playing a behind-closed-doors intra-squad match at Goodison also features in the Echo, which particularly notes the involvement of a number of Blues young guns including Anthony Gordon, Dennis Adeniran, Jarrad Branthwaite, Kyle John and Ellis Simms.
