What The Papers Say – 29 May

The announcement of a proposed Premier League restart date dominates Friday’s sports news agenda.

Every national publication dissects the plans which feature a return for England’s top-flight on 17 June and all 92 remaining matches being screened live on television.

It is widely reported Everton’s all-Merseyside meeting with Liverpool on the first full weekend of fixtures will be broadcast on free-to-air television.

The Daily Mirror, meanwhile, suggests Everton v Liverpool could be moved from Goodison Park to a neutral venue, with Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium potentially in line to host the fixture.

Away from the mooted Premier League resumption, transfer speculation continues to claim a share of column inches.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Wendel is said by Portuguese outlet Plataforma to be firmly in Everton’s sights.

The 22-year-old joined Sporting from Fluminense at the start of 2018 and in his first full season helped the capital team claim a domestic cup double.

Everton have offered Sporting "€15m plus bonuses" for the player, according to Plataforma.

L’Equipe says Ligue 1 Monaco are “ready to lower” the €14m fee the paper says would trigger Djibril Sidibe’s permanent move to Everton.

Right-back Sidibe is on loan at Goodison this term and has played 24 games in all competitions after making his debut in Everton’s League Cup win at Lincoln City back in August.

Decorated Uruguayan centre-half Diego Godin is linked with Everton by Calciomercato Inter.

A formidable performer with Atletico Madrid for nine seasons, Godin left the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium for Serie A last summer but Inter boss Antonio Conte is apparently willing to okay the player’s exit.

Godin, who has 135 senior international caps and featured in the past three World Cups, supposedly has serious interest from Everton and Premier League counterparts Manchester United.

The Daily Mail is among the newspapers reporting on the injury setback suffered by Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Ivorian Gbamin hurt his achilles training at USM Finch Farm and the Mail quotes a Club statement which read: “It is expected he will require an extensive period of rehabilitation… Everyone at the club is devastated for JP and we will ensure he gets all the support he needs throughout this challenging time.”
