Blues' Birthdays: On This Day

Everton have never played a competitive fixture ON THIS DAY, but we have got a couple of birthdays to celebrate!

It’s fair to say Brian Kidd is a north west football legend.

A European Cup winner with Manchester United as a player and a huge part of trophy successes with both City and United as a coach, Kidd also stopped off at Goodison Park during his incredible career.

He joined the Blues from Manchester City in March 1979 and made his debut in a 3-1 defeat against Bolton Wanderers at Burnden Park.

Kidd was Everton’s leading scorer in his only full season with the Club, scoring 17 goals in the 1979/80 campaign – including four in four FA Cup ties, although his contribution in that competition was blighted somewhat when he was sent off in the semi-final against West Ham!

In total he played 51 games for the Club, scoring 19 goals.  Happy 71st birthday, Kiddo!

Born in Dublin, Mick Meagan joined Everton in 1952 but didn’t make his first-team debut until August 1957, in a 1-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison.

The defender's most memorable game for the Blues, though, was undoubtedly the 4-1 victory against Fulham in 1963 that cinched the First Division title.

In total, Meagan played 177 games for Everton, scoring one goal – against Sunderland in his first season when he dispossessed future England manager Don Revie before finding the net!

He left Everton in 1964 as part of the deal that brought Ray Wilson to Goodison from Huddersfield Town and five years later he became the first proper manager of the Republic of Ireland national team, which had hitherto been selected by a committee.

Happy 86th birthday, Mick!

Everton - Howard's Way tells the full story of Howard Kendall's glorious trophy-winning team in the 1980s and tales from Merseyside during that era.

All proceeds from the documentary will go to fund The People's Place, Everton's purpose-built mental health facility close to Goodison Park.
