Winger Hits Hat-Trick And Blues Beat Hammers: On This Day

Harry Catterick’s Everton secured a sixth-place finish in the First Division with a 4-1 victory against Sunderland ON THIS DAY in 1967.

The hero at Goodison Park on 16 May was winger Johnny Morrisey who scored the one and only hat-trick of his Everton career.

Morrisey had scored just four goals all season but put three past Sunderland legend Jim Montgomery on the last day of the 1966/67 campaign.

Colin Harvey scored the other Everton goal with Neil Martin netting Sunderland’s consolation.

The game was the 303rd and very last in an Everton shirt for Jimmy Gabriel.

The immensely popular Scot had been told by Harry Catterick that new signing Howard Kendall would be his first choice and so he left in the summer of '67 for Southampton.

Romelu Lukaku scored against West Ham United for the sixth game in succession ON THIS DAY in 2015…but he left it very late!

Everton manager Roberto Martinez handed Brendan Galloway his Premier League debut, but it was the Hammers who struck first through Stewart Downing in the 62nd minute.

The lead lasted just six minutes before Lukaku found Osman inside the box who took one touch to get the ball under control and then lashed a great shot past Adrian.

A share of the spoils was looking the likely outcome…until the 93rd minute.

Aidan McGeady crossed the ball and Lukaku applied the finish to help Everton leapfrog West Ham into 10th position in the Premier League table.

Everton also beat the Hammers ON THIS DAY in 2009.

This time the game was at Goodison and Everton ran out 3-1 winners but once again they had to come from behind to take all three points.

Radoslav Kovac scored a stunning goal in the 23rd minute to give Gianfranco Zola’s men the lead but the game turned just before half-time when James Tomkins was sent-off for a foul on Tim Cahill inside the Hammers box.

Louis Saha tucked away the penalty and Everton were back in it.

Three minutes into the second-half, Joseph Yobo scored to put the hosts into the lead and Saha wrapped things up on 76 after excellent build-up play from Steve Pienaar.
