LISTEN: Bayern captain Augenthaler On 'Phenomenal' Goodison Night

Everton's Goodison Park toppling of mighty Bayern Munich in 1985 is enshrined in Club lore.

Howard Kendall's team were paired with German superpower Bayern in the semi-final of the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Everton returned from a hairy trip to Munich's Olympic Stadium unscathed, the sides goalless and poised for a winner-takes-all contest in L4.

What unfolded back on Merseyside was unquestionably one of the greatest nights in the Club's history, as Everton recovered from the hammer blow of conceding first to score three unanswered second-half goals and send an already cacophonous Goodison into frenzy.

Klaus Augenthaler was 27 and the Bayern captain trying to retain order as his side creaked at the seams.

The Germany international defender spoke to evertonfc.com about his memories of a night which is glued in his memory banks.

Augenthaler played in the 1982 European Cup final and was suspended for the same fixture in 1987 after helping Bayern thump Real Madrid in the last four.

He won the World Cup with his country in 1990 and was a member of the German side which broke English hearts in the semi-final in Turin.

But one-club man Augenthaler insists his visit to Goodison is one of few European fixtures from an illustrious 25-year career he can recall with compete clarity.

A seven-times Bundesliga winner, Augenthaler rates the Bayern side beaten by Everton as the best he played in but concedes they feared being 'rolled over' by Kendall's turbo-charged team.
